by the American Institute of Architects (AIA). This has
to be the primary site for researching data on the careers
of American architects up to 1978, The Directory contains
information on 57,582 names [as of January 2010] and includes
the full text of the 1956, 1962 and 1970 editions of the
American Architects Directory (R.R. Bowker 1956-70).
Cinema
Treasures was launched in 2000 by filmmaker and technologist
Patrick Crowley, and film historian Ross Melnick. The site
is dedicated to the preservation of movie houses worldwide
and currently [2010] contains details of nearly 28,6000
cinemas, (e.g. 22,197 in the USA, 3,108 in the UK, 803 in
Canada, etc.), with nearly 1,600 photographs. The site can
be searched by architect, chain, firm, and location. Whilst
the site does not contain biographical information on the
architects it is useful for tracing buildings they designed.
Conceived
by Alan Michelson, Head of the Architecture and Urban Planning
Library, University of Washington, Seattle and started in
2002. Contains biographical/historical data on architects,
architectural practices, interior designers, developers
and building contractors who have worked in the US states
of California, Oregon and Washington. The database identifies
the creators of specific buildings. It also includes an
extensive bibliography and a list of major exhibitions.
The
Philadelphia Architects and Buildings Project (PAB) is compiled
by The Athenæum of Philadelphia, the University of
Pennsylvania Architectural Archives, the Philadelphia Historical
Commission, and other local culptural institutions. It includes
biographies or biographical sketches of more than 2,500
architects together with project information for over 8,000
additional architects, engineers and contractors; architectural
and historical information and images for over 35,000 structures
in the Philadelphia area.
