The RMIT Design Archives of RMIT University
in Melbourne, Victoria is increasingly becoming the foremost
centre for research into the history of Australian design
and designers. It is a growing facility which actively collects
material specifically relating to design in Melbourne from
the twentieth century onwards, including fashion and textile
design, architecture, industrial design, interior design,
landscape architecture, graphic design, gold and silversmithing
and sound. It incorporates the Frances Burke Centre, established
in 1994, that housed archives of some of Melbourne’s
key fashion and textile designers.
The RMIT Design Archives will eventually
be housed in the new Design Hub on the corner of Victoria
and Swanton Streets, Melbourne which is due for completion
in 2011.
